Local Fishing Report
for the
Bighorn Mountains

Fishing Report for Month of May 2008

Big Horn Mountain Area Streams:
Including Clear Creek, Rock Creek, Piney Creek, Goose Creek, Tongue River,
Powder River, Tensleep Creek, Paintrock Creek, and Shell Creek

Most mountain sections are frozen and fishing will be spotty.  Lower elevation and canyon sections are the best bets right now.  Water levels are quite variable - high and a little off color on warm days and low and clear on cooler days.

Fly fishermen may have luck with a variety of small beadhead nymphs.   Good patterns are Copper John's, Hare's Ear Nymphs, and Red Fox Squirrel Nymphs.  Be on the look out for midge or BWO hatches on warm afternoons.

Spin Fishermen may have luck with worms or very small spinners fished in the deeper holes.

The access road to the Middle Fork of Powder River at Outlaw Cave is still closed, because it is snowed in.  A week or so of warm weather should help get this access open.

Mountain Lakes:
Including Meadowlark Lake, Tie-Hack Reservoir, East & West Tensleep Lakes,
and all Cloud Peak Wilderness Lakes.

High mountain lakes are still frozen with 24-36" of good ice.  They are ice fishing at Meadowlark Lake and Tie-Hack Reservoir. Ice flies, Swedish Pimples, & small Mister Twisters with a meal worm are good bets.

Prairie Lakes:
Including Lake DeSmet, Hailey Reservoir, and Muddy Guard Reservoirs.

There Hailey and Muddy Guard Reservoirs, and the Buffalo Wetlands Pond
are open and fishing is starting to pick up.

Perch fishing is good at Hailey and the Wetlands pond.  Muddy Guard is good for trout - small nymphs like Midge pupae and Chironomid patterns will be effective for fly fishermen.  Small spinners or spoons will work for the spin fisherman.

Lake DeSmet,  is open and fishing is starting to pick up.  The south dam area is the fishing hot spot right now.

Fly fishermen will have luck with Prince Nymphs, Pheasant Tails and Hare's Ears.
Spin fishermen will have their best luck with worms or Powerbait fished off of the bottom.
