Local Fishing Report
for the
Bighorn Mountains

Fishing Report for Month of September 2009

Big Horn Mountain Area Streams:
Including Clear Creek, Rock Creek, Piney Creek, Goose Creek, Tongue River,
Powder River, Tensleep Creek, Paintrock Creek, and Shell Creek

Fly fishermen are having luck with a variety of dry flies.  Hopper patterns will be effective on warm afternoons.  Be on the look out for sporadic mayfly or caddis hatches in the morning or evening hours.

Streamer fishing will pick up on lower elevation sections, as the Brown trout become more aggressive in the fall.  Brown Wooly Buggers, and Crawdad patterns would be good bets.

Spin Fishermen may have luck with worms or  gold or copper colored spinners fished in the deeper holes.

Mountain Lakes:
Including Meadowlark Lake, Tie-Hack Reservoir, East & West Tensleep Lakes,
and all Cloud Peak Wilderness Lakes.

All Mountain lakes are open and fishing is very good.

Fly Fishermen should have luck with a variety of dry flies, good bets would be Peacock Caddis, Adams, Chernobyl Ants, Beetles, and small ants.  Small nymphs will also be effective, good patterns would be Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears, and Copper John's.

Spin Fishermen should try small spinners, Lil Jakes, worms, or a fly and a bubble.

Prairie Lakes:
Including Lake DeSmet, Healy Reservoir, and Muddy Guard Reservoirs.

Muddy Guard Reservoirs should start picking up with the cooler temperatures.  Fly fishermen should try streamer patterns, crawdad patterns, and backswimmers, this time of year.

The fish are really good size in these reservoirs, but action is fairly slow.  Most anglers are getting one or two a trip, but they are usually very nice fish.

Anglers are reporting some luck at Healy Reservoir, good catches of Yellow Perch and a few smaller Splake are being caught.

Fly fishermen could try beadhead nymphs or small streamers and wooly buggers.

Spin Fishermen may have luck with Jakes Lures, or spinners or Jigs with twister tails.

Lake DeSmet

Fishing is picking up at Lake DeSmet.   Fly fishermen are having good luck both wade fishing and in kick boats throwing streamer patterns.  And boat fishermen are doing well trolling with Krocodiles, Cowbells, Rapalas, and big streamers.
